Wikipedia Work-Around

January 18, 2012

OMG! Where's my Wiki?

Think what you like about SOPA, for those of you missing Wikipedia (and Google Guide), here's a way to find that information you just have to have now, now, now.

Use this little SEO-inspired trick for the Wikipedia or other resource page you just can't live without for the next 18 hours or so.

From the search results page in Google, locate the Wikipedia listing you'd like to visit. Then hover just to the right of the listing (where you see the orange arrow below) and an "instant preview" of the Web page will appear. Now click on the "cached" link within the instant preview (indicated by the red box below) and, voila, you’ve beaten the system. Or you're a scab, depending on your politics.

Keep in mind that you still won't be able to navigate to pages within Wikipedia, since these will all be live links that will just take you to the notorious blackout explanation. You'll need to search each page separately. Annoying, but better than nothing, eh?

As John Hodgman might say, "You're welcome."
